Mac OS X support added to Microsoft Intune – enrolling Mac OS X

Screen Shot 2015-10-10 at 1.19.51 PMAs announced at Ignite earlier this year Microsoft is adding support for managing Mac OS X devices via Microsoft Intune during the upcoming service update. Yesterday Kieran Gupta explained the current features that are supported.

This blog will be about enrolling the device into the Microsoft Intune service, in later blogs we will have a look how to deploy settings and see what currently is supported.

To get the device enrolled into Microsoft Intune we need to be sure that the following requirements are met:

  • Operating System is Mac OS X 10.9 or later
  • User enrolling the device needs to be local administrator on the Mac OS X device.
  • Mobile Device Management for iOS and Mac OS X needs to be enabled.
  • User enrolling the device need to have a Intune or EMS license.

After the requirements are met the enrollment process can be started by following the next steps;

1. On the Mac OS X device, go to and click on the notification bar stating “This device is either not enrolled or the Company Portal can’t identify it.”

2. Next click Enroll and Install to enroll the device and installing the Management Profile of Microsoft Intune.

3. Click Install to install the Management Profile which is downloaded from Microsoft Intune.

4. Click Show Profile to be able to see what profile is going to be installed and click Continue

5. Click Install in the dialog that states “Are you sure you want to install profile Management Profile”.
6. After the enrollment is done, close the browser and Preferences screens and re-logon to the Company Portal website, there you will see the newly enrolled Mac device. If you click on the device you can see the compliance state of the device.

After that we have been enrolled we are able to manage the Mac by doing the following;

  • Perform remote actions
  • Deploy Policies
    • Password policies
    • Application compliance lists
    • Custom policies (created via the Apple configurator)
  • Deploy VPN Profiles
  • Deploy Wi-Fi Profiles
  • Deploy Certificates
  • Report information about the Mac’s
